Course Description: Literature and Expository Reading and Writing

We will read academically challenging texts that require critical thinking. You will be asked to “enter the conversation.” We will work on reading strategies you are long familiar with (previewing; chunking; etc.). We will also focus on summarizing, explaining, analyzing, and evaluating complex ideas and responding to these ideas in writing. We are looking to improve our writing for clarity, following the conventions of the English language.

Expectations:

·       Stay engaged by attending class, by asking and answering questions, by commenting on the readings, and by completing assignments.

·       Be on time.

·       Be attentive.

·       Be courteous.

·       Do not cheat.

·       Do your best.

·       No extraneous or loud talk.

Regarding Assignments:

I will be assigning assignments in class. I will grade in Aeries. You can easily see your grades. You have 5 days to dispute a grade once it is posted. After that, the grade stands.

Cell Phone Policy:

Phones MUST be off and away during class.

Keep your focus on the people in class and on activities going on in class.

Cuts and Tardies:

If you arrive more than 30 minutes late you will be marked as “Absent.”

Once you arrive in class, if you come and go without permission, or leave class early, (even one minute early) you will be marked as “Absent/Cut.”

Late Work Policy:

I WILL NOT ACCEPT WORK THAT IS MORE THAN 5 SCHOOL DAYS LATE.

Work that is 1 day to 5 days late will not receive a grade higher than a C.
