Literacy is my passion! Even when I'm not at school, I can be found creating and researching materials to support early learners and their families.
My road to teaching in the classroom began early as I admired the many educators in my family and was also surrounded by tons of books and magazines as a child. Growing up in the Oakland Bay Area helped me to develop a love for diversity and an appreciation for all cultures.
As a young lady, I didn't know that my love and appreciation for cultures and books would merge into my earning a Masters in Education with a focus on multicultural literature and leadership. But it did! and here I am helping students learn to read and read what they love.
Initially, I earned my first degree in Psychology from San Jose State University, and my master's degree and Reading Specialist Credential from Saint Mary's College in Moraga. Before entering the classroom, I spent seven years working alongside homeschool families as their credentialed teacher advocate and teacher. I loved this time because it allowed me to stay at home with my four children.
Moving forward, I moved into the classroom teaching grades third, intervention, kindergarten, first, K-1 combos and even computers. It's kind of interesting how all of these experiences have helped me to become the Virtual Reading Teacher who works with families and children to learn to read and read what they love! Besides teaching reading, loving to take long walks, shopping, I write books for early readers!
One of my favorite quotes:
"If there’s a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it." Toni Morrison
